Raliegh isn't really bad because of the number of cars, it's just the layout of the exits from the interstates and such....You will see what I mean when you get there, it's a mess, and last year contruction everywhere...
When I went thru ATL, I was going on my anniversary to catch a couple of Braves games (wife's choice by the way, isn't she great). Also going on that weekend was Clemson @ GT, the Black Coaches Association Game @ the Georgia Dome, can't remember the teams, I think Grambling and Southern, and it was also the Black Band Festival and Art Show. So there were a lot of things going on when I was there.
BTW, the Black Band Festival was off the chain, there were probably 12-15 University's, one right after the other going down the main drag of Atlanta and the bands were dancing and playing, it was very entertaining.

That whole area Raliegh, Chapel Hill, Durham...is a mess. Somehow you'll always end up in Cary, no matter what exit you take. haha

Raleigh isn't all that bad. The exit orientation is their lone black eye. Very easy to get trapped into a exit.
Every city has it's black eye in terms of traffic. I hate Atlanta, Houston is bad, Dallas is bad, Baltimore is horrible. Try driving around DC at 4PM on a Friday afternoon.

Lots of odd ball one way roads in Raleigh as well I thought. Definitely odd exit patterns.

Also, the construction you speak of, its always there. It takes longer to get stuff done than it did on 81 in Bristol.

If you come in on 64 off of 95 you can miss most of the ugliness that is the Triangle . You have the inner loop 440 and the outer loop 440 , 540 (really outer loop ) Interstate 40 , Hwy 70 and Hwy 64 . The worst congestion is on 40 around the airport exit . 6-8 lanes and the interstate is still a parking lot at rush hours.
My favorite roadsign just east of Raleigh on 64 .

As SunTzu said,, most of the roads circle Raleigh. It isn't so bad after you've been there a few times. Yeah, around 280 mile marker it seems every exit is to Cary,, ha..
